How often should you detail your car in the Arizona sun?

El Patron LLC, West Valley, Arizona · Updated October 2026

For a daily driver in Arizona, a wash every two weeks, a full detail two to four times a year, and paint protection once or twice a year is a good rhythm. Wash sooner after a dust storm or a monsoon rain.

Why the desert changes the schedule

Cars in Arizona deal with three things most cars elsewhere do not see as much: strong sun most of the year, fine dust in the air, and hard water. Each one works on the car a little every day.

  • Sun fades paint, dries out rubber and trim, cracks dashboards and turns headlight lenses yellow.
  • Dust settles on the paint and acts like fine sandpaper when you wipe it off dry.
  • Hard water leaves mineral spots when it dries in the heat, and those spots can etch into the clear coat if they sit.

A schedule that works

Every two weeks: a wash

A regular wash takes the dust off before it builds up. If the car sits outside or you drive dirt roads, go weekly.

Every three to six months: a full detail

A full detail gets the inside too: the dust that comes in every time a door opens, the sweat and sunscreen on the seats, and the film on the inside of the glass. Spring, before the heat, and fall, after monsoon season, are good times.

Once or twice a year: protection

Wax or sealant every few months, or a ceramic coating that lasts much longer, keeps the sun and water off the paint itself. A coated car is also faster to wash.

Signs your car needs attention now

  • Water no longer beads up on the hood.
  • The paint feels rough when you run a clean hand over it.
  • White spots stay on the glass or paint after it dries.
  • The headlights look cloudy or yellow.
  • The inside smells stale when you open the door in the afternoon.

Small habits that help

  • Park in shade or a garage when you can, and use a sunshade on the windshield.
  • Do not dry-wipe dust off the paint. Rinse it first.
  • Wash early in the morning or in shade so water does not dry into spots.
  • Rinse bird droppings and bug spatter off soon. Heat bakes them in.
